series 1: heads
These portraits are symbolic of an emotional humanity. Fears and desires are expressed by the emphatic use of colour and distortion.
The paint is applied quickly and energetically in a loose, expressionistic manner.
series 2: maps
Unlike ‘Heads’ these maps are structured and meticulously executed. There are no emotions, but the stylistic language remains important. I have attempted to employ the preciseness of city maps, which inform and direct, as a basis for broader themes such as globalisation and memory.
Initially inspired by my travels, these maps were painted in a technique requiring the ‘rubbing out’ and overlapping of paint, metaphorically echoing the processes in memory and the loss thereof.
series 3: kinetic drawings
I allow the energy from my body to flow down through my arms, through my fingers and into my drawing implement. From there, it moves freely, without volition, spiralling and dancing on the board, touching lightly or pressing fiercely, depending on the force and flow of the energy that flows through me.
“The body is the instrument of the mind.
The mind is the instrument of the heart.”
