Toni Bico is a full-time artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. His works are found in private collections in South Africa, Europe, United States, Singapore and Australia.
Toni was born in Quelimane, Mozambique in 1963. His childhood was spent on a remote cattle farm in Mozambique which left lasting impressions of rural Africa on Toni. This idyllic life was abruptly interrupted when he was forced to flee his war-torn birthplace in 1974 and seek refuge in South Africa with his family.
Toni’s first drawings were done in primary school in South Africa to illustrate his schoolwork. He spoke little English, so he drew to communicate, to express himself and to be recognised as an individual. These experiences were to become some of his most enduring experiences and are a recurring theme in his work. Toni went on to study English Literature and Psychology at Witswatersrand University and the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Johannesburg. He had his first solo exhibition in 1995 at the Wedgewood Gallery in Johannesburg. This was followed by a visit to the United States culminating in an exhibition in the Gallery of Contemporary African Art in New York City.
In 2001, he exhibited at the Zone in Rosebank before taking over the family business. In 2004 he travelled to South-east Asia on a sabbatical returning to exhibit ‘6300 Kilometers at Zietsie’s in Johannesburg. In 2007 and 2008, he has had solo shows at the Prince Albert Gallery and Upstairs@Bamboo respectively |
